Book Reading: Designing the Moment

Discuss this panel here.

3/7 – 5:00PM – Room Day Stage

The trick to great design is knowing how to think through each decision so that users don’t have to. In Designing the Moment: Web Interface Design Concepts in Action, Robert Hoekman, author of Designing the Obvious, presents over 30 stories that illustrate how to put good design principles to work on real-world web application interfaces to make them obvious and compelling. From the first impression to the last, Hoekman takes a think out loud approach to interface design to show us how to look critically at design decisions to ensure that human beings, the kind that make mistakes and do things we don’t expect, can walk away from our software feeling productive, respected, and smart.

Career Rev 342: Dabble Dabble, Toil and Kick Ass

Discuss this panel here.

3/7 – 3:30PM – Room 19AB

Zen masters taught it. Isaac Newton knew it. Scott Adams writes about it. Now you can know it, too We’re talking, of course, about the manifold benefits of being a n00b (at something). And, of course, about all the good stuff that happens post-n00bishness: the excellent side effects of being good at multiple things, even if they’re not related – heck, especially if they’re not related. So many of humanity’s important discoveries, innovations and beautiful leaps of logic have been made by people whose brains were leveled up by the cross-fertilization of multiple interests and disciplines. Nano-thin specialization is out, a broad understanding of life, the universe, and everything is in. It’s time to synergize, baby. So, reach outside your comfort zone, be a beginner again, and you’ll be smarter, sexier, better at you job… even more valuable. With the wisdom of the ages (and a little bit from modern pundits), we’ll talk about how, why, when, and where you can go about it. You won’t regret it.

As a web developer, you’ll already know that JavaScript is a powerful language, allowing you to add an impressive array of dynamic functionality to otherwise static web sites. But there is more power waiting to be unlocked—JavaScript is capable of full object-oriented capabilities, and by applying OOP principles, best practices, and design patterns to your code, you can make it more powerful, more efficient, and easier to work with alone or as part of a team. With Pro JavaScript Design Patterns, you’ll start with the basics of object-oriented programming in JavaScript applicable to design patterns, including making JavaScript more expressive, inheritance, encapsulation, information hiding, and more. With that covered, you can kick-start your JavaScript development in the second part of the book, where you’ll find detail on how to implement and take advantage of several design patterns in JavaScript, including composites, decorators, facades, adapters, and many more.

Edit Me! How Gamers are Adopting the Wiki Way

Discuss this panel here.

3/7 – 3:30PM – Room 12AB

The current next-gen landscape has fostered a gaming environment with unprecedented level of interactivity and depth. Game wikis such as WowWiki and FFxiclopedia have long served as respected resources for the largest MMO’s and have enjoyed high use awareness within the communities. As more games start to incorporate MMO-like community elements, Gaming communities have stepped up with a proliferation of fan-run wikis that have caused publishers and developers to take a closer look at the community ecosystem forming around their products. In addition to being great content resources, the communities behind the wikis have become a strong voice and typically including some of the most passionate and influential players of a game. Engaging with the wiki communities has become another way for a developer to monitor the pulse of their community and gain real-time feedback. This panel will examine what makes game wiki communities tick, how developers are leveraging this new community channel, and what to expect in the future as more and more gamers start to take community management into their own hands.
