online operating system?

  • some concepts earlier social networks had
  • bringing smart issues to everyone
  • touts new teammates
    • they’ve already been thinking about this for years
  • he’s talking about Blake. can i change this?

Facebook in other countries

  • making sure people’s info stays private is key
  • we aren’t openly working with governments
  • but we have to follow the law
  • we try not to get into situations where following the law compromises privacy
  • how do we approach china?
    • either no servers in china
      • then they can slow down facebook
    • or servers in china
      • they can arrest the server operators
  • there are ways to position these things
  • create minimal exposure
  • people’s private info should be accessible to only their own friends
  • core to fb

how has FB changed his own social life?

  • i have a small group of close friends
  • going through this companybuilding experience has been very interesting
  • some strain but great friendships
  • it’s been cool

i'm robert scoble and i was kicked out

  • i got a lot of pushback from the community
  • “You don’t have the right to take my name or bday or anything and put it on a different site”
  • how to become more portable with data when some users think that it shouldn’t be portable
  • z: in news feed if you share some info and then take access away it gets remove from their newsfeed
  • if we syndicated newsfeed via RSS, you couldn’t ensure that would happen
  • these are some of the privacy concerns
  • earlier he wouldn’t commit to matching others’ efforts

SXSW / 2008-03-10 21:56:07

we think openness is good

  • philosophically aligned with data portability
  • we have to respect our massive userbase
  • specific case = access to bdays
  • scraping is evil
  • most of them intend to spam
  • we just have a policy against that

SXSW / 2008-03-10 21:57:44

various religions are being banned or closed

  • regional networks
  • policy decision to map out the regional networks based on US diplomatic efforts.
  • we’re not in the business of defining countries
  • we aren’t trying to impose any editorial voice on what are countries
  • move away from the current network structure and let them have their own networks.

ben from icanhazcheesburger

  • some of his friends have stopped using FB
  • they can’t articulate why
  • they have dropped off – why do you think zuck?
  • z: a lot of the shifts are in the platform ecosystem
  • increasingly platform apps are a big way ppl interact
  • use the social graph info for other apps to leverage
  • we’ve aligned people’s incentives poorly
  • distribution rewards, not necessary longterm value or trust rewards
  • ecosystem shifts are moving in that direction
  • 20 or 15 is a good number of viral invites
  • apps spammed individuals when they could go beyond that
  • if apps are providing real value and trustworthy to real ppl then users won’t find them spammy
  • now we’re going to retard their distribution if they’re spammy
  • we’re moving away from the # of installs and towards the amount of meaningful trusted content they’re producting.
  • this will achieve our goal of helping ppl communicate and hare info easily.
  • if the apps are helping out in that experience then it’s totally positive
  • that is part of the trend we’re seeing and why we’re shifting
  • should be good for users, new devs, existing devs (make them more trustworthy and ehlp users generat more info)
  • this is only going to hurt SPAMMERS>

SXSW / 2008-03-10 21:51:11

getting reinstated - it's easy for robert

  • we have an appeals process
  • there’s a standard way for people to get reinstated
  • that isn’t true, everyone can get back in

SXSW / 2008-03-10 21:58:49

roadmap or timeframe for increasing outside svcs

  • there are things that are being worked on in beacon or the api that are ongoing
  • over time the goal is to get access to everything.
  • this is going to be very important
  • but no timeframe
  • this is an important one for the community: data portability
  • ppl are focusing on this area
  • Joseph Smart giving a session at 5pm about data portability
  • so, i think a lot of the work ppl are doing is going to be valuable
  • how this plays in with privacy will be around 6mo
