no not at all

i like the labels on the menus.

i just want a “tools” menu again that’s all :)

that would get rid of the hierarchical menus.

i love the new menus.

sonicsrini / 2008-03-18 17:33:29

:)

so much information. love it!

manditron / 2008-03-17 17:32:19

the people menu

  • when the social network side of things is done, the people menu should have the tools for managing one’s personal social network.
  • i want to see my friends in there (of course)
  • i will always love “heroes” and “your hosts”
    • especially when we start creating actual content in our public metanotes accounts

sonicsrini / 2008-03-16 19:06:40

Priority?

Is there any prioritization to the tasks on this page?

emery / 2008-03-20 23:36:15

I hate the new menus.

I still use the old menus at home.

I’m thinking of making it a preference, so you can switch between menu styles.

beppu / 2008-03-21 05:38:10

So you're saying...

...I should go back to something closer to the old menus?

beppu / 2008-03-18 17:28:20

inline expansion in the help panel

that way i can fit more help topics in there

also would love this to be tabbed so i can put a few different types of help in there:
  • getting started
  • how to use metanotes like a pro
  • contact us

sonicsrini / 2008-03-24 10:34:02

space log

so you can tell what notes on a page are new.

sonicsrini / 2008-03-24 10:35:24

beginner, medium and expert modes

beginner has tons and tons of tooltips

intermediate is like the current userbase

you start as a beginner then auto-upgrade yourself as you get the hang of it

you pay to upgrade to expert (no ads, publish mode etc)

sonicsrini / 2008-03-24 10:36:22

the return of NOTE STATS

i really want to know what users are using it most

i really want users to feel so cool seeing themselves ring up new notes

i really want a leaderboard

sonicsrini / 2008-03-24 10:37:42

metanotes color war

aka our note-theme version of twitter color war

sonicsrini / 2008-03-24 10:38:20

i want "increase font size" as a note property

so we have A+ and A- which is good

but what about new users coming into the space... who might never have seen a metanotes space before?

i’d like the ability to just make the text in a given note permanently larger or smaller via the contextual menu.

sonicsrini / 2008-03-24 10:40:43

the concept of LAYERS.

layers are the new “tabs”.

would this work to overcome the pain of the second session?

my second session of notetaking on this space could begin by my “creating a new layer”.

this layer would be a blank sheet that overlaid the first session’s notespace.

it would be in effect “a tab”.

the layer-switching interface should be rich.

this is going to be good.

sonicsrini / 2008-03-25 03:21:23

it was so hard to create space for new notes.

the pain of the second session.

This is going to refer to this scenario:

  • i have created an awesome bunch of notes.
  • i have left the space alone for a while.
    • in the meantime, i hope you’ve seen these notes.
    • but i have no idea whether they’ve been read or not.
    • i would like to know.
  • anyhow, a week later, i want to create a new round of notes.
  • they have to do with this space so i want them all on the same space.
    • i don’t really even want them in a different layer, although that is a workable kloodge because layers are important.
  • but i want you to see these new notes FIRST.
  • they are, however, further from the origin.
  • you have one indication that there are new notes: the notes menu will show my new notes.
    • this can be made far more explicit – that would take us part of the way.
  • but the real solution would be scrolling the space to create new space atop the old notes.
  • another real solution would be

sonicsrini / 2008-03-25 03:15:57

permissions and privacy should include thinking about RSS!

it seems obvious that we are going to use RSS to communicate news about changes that given users make to various spaces.

  • what does this imply?
  • this implies that:
    • your friends are going to see all of the changes you make to all of your spaces.
    • this “feed” is generated dynamically as you move around the system.
    • this will enhance the likelihood of people collaborating.
      • “oh look, jennifer just logged in!”
    • but it’s also intrusive.
    • *therefore privacy is key.

people should be able to cloak themselves.

they should be able to set whether their actions are posted to their feeds or not.

this permissions level should be persistent – that is to say, if i am “cloaked”, everything i do is cloaked even if i move to another space, login and logout a month later, etc.

but open should be the default because we want an open culture, and we want people to generate these rss feed items so we can start pushing out changes into services like friendfeed and socialthing.

this implies that there is a very useful thing that our social network can actually do.

your friends should get messages when you log in, add notes to a space, etc.

these should appear in the bottom left menu.

these should be clickable so you will zoop to the note your friend manipulated if you click it, thus enhancing the likelihood of synchronicity.

sonicsrini / 2008-03-25 03:02:07

SORTING NOTES ON A SPACE

  • just like on a metaspace, you should be able to sort the notes on a space
    • by date stamp
      • oldest to newest
      • newest to oldest

this should simply be done by having different views generated in the background for each sort.

sonicsrini / 2008-03-25 03:47:46

avoiding hierarchical menus for spacename & spaces

  • i want the spacename menu to simply be straight up a list of notes.
  • i want the spaces menu to be straight up a list of spaces, no hierarchy
  • i miss the tools menu.
    • i think everything that forces the other menus to be hierarchical should be put in a tools menu:
      • collaborate
      • space settings
      • etc.

sonicsrini / 2008-03-16 19:04:39

locking notes

there is no effective homepage until we do

sonicsrini / 2008-03-16 19:17:31

i'm going to populate this space with post-sxsw tweaks

  • i’m creating it in your account instead of mine for the heck of it
    • i am guessing you’d most likely see it
    • sort of “feels” weird, i think i’d rather create a space in my account and “send” it to you.

sonicsrini / 2008-03-16 19:02:05

the "acknowledge" contextual menu item.

ok, this is a few days after the last bunch of notes created.

here is a psychological profile of what is going on:

  • i’m not sure if all of these notes have been acknowledged.
    • it would be amazing if we had a feature that let users acknowledge that they read it.
      • this is simpler than comments.
      • it’s sort of like a “acknowledged by beppu on date” datapoint that would give me an indication that you read it.
      • like a no-content guestbook for a note. this would be so cool.
      • obviously it could be done by tagging.
      • and a contextual menu item called acknowledge.

sonicsrini / 2008-03-25 03:01:39

CIRCLES quick fix

sort them by “last note created”.

this way, the more active circles percolate to the top, upping the odds of synchronous presence on a space.

sonicsrini / 2008-03-25 04:35:43

Not sure if that last point was clear.

As the writer, i want you to see these orange juice notes first.

to me, they are the first thing i want you to see.

to you, they are after all what is new. you don’t mind working backwards from newest to oldest in order to comprehend the whole story, because that’s how blogs work anyway.

sonicsrini / 2008-03-25 03:44:44

a great idea

you should be able to tag notes with a priority (like 1,2,3,4,5) and sort notes by priority

sonicsrini / 2008-03-21 04:00:55

SPACE-LEVEL RSS ????

it is possible that if RSS applies to a space, and not a user, this is solved.

because if a space is open, it sends out notices to all subscribers to that space. and if it’s closed, it does not.

a user is a subscriber to a space the second they add a note to it. they can also just choose to subscribe to a space.

so users “subscribe” to spaces and are fed changes in the time log.

sonicsrini / 2008-03-25 04:40:35

some of this can be visualized with a SPACE LOG

  • the space log would be a list of changes to the sheet
  • it would be sorted by recency just like the time log
  • changes to a space could be broadcast via RSS into “subscribers” time logs

sonicsrini / 2008-03-25 04:38:12

bunch of orange juice notes.

there are a bunch of new notes to the right that are in the orange juice note theme.

topics covered:
  • sort circles by last note created
  • acknowledgement
  • layers (the new tabs)
  • RSS feeds and privacy
    • users should be able to cloak and decloak
    • these can feed into the time log
      • i think it’s useful to see all the notes i created in my own time log
      • i think it’d be wonderful to see notices that “matt has modified spacename” in my time log.

sonicsrini / 2008-03-25 03:35:27

OK, this service is going to spawn a LOT of notes.

there is simply no getting around the fact that LOTS of notes will be created here IN GENERAL.

this is obvious.

it’s a note-creation machine.

there are going to be a lot of notes.

the note chat stuff is ADDICTIVE too.

sonicsrini / 2008-03-25 04:55:06

USERS SUBSCRIBING TO SPACES

done with tagging.

these spaces appear in each subscribers’ metaspace.

they’ll pop to the top in the last-note-created default sort.

subscribers will get RSS notifications of changes to that space in their timelog.

you should be able to see who’s subscribed to a space in one of that spaces’ menus.

subscribers to a space can be blocked or banned.

subscribers to a space can add a new layer.

sonicsrini / 2008-03-25 04:43:11

circles

  • people should be able to
    • create new circles
    • announce new circles
    • add and remove circles from their circles menu
    • explore circles

sonicsrini / 2008-03-16 19:17:49

Think of Layers as new sheets of paper.

A space is actually a folder full of layers.

you want to fill up many layers over time within one space.

as a user you only see one layer at a time.

but all of the notes are in that space, and you can easily swap between sheets.

the layers can be:
  • different topics under a larger umbrella
    • like sections of a business plan
  • different sessions of a class
  • different sessions of brainstorming
  • you can lock one layer and then let other users simply spawn new layers if they want to comment
    • sort of like “wikipedia talk pages”

If this were in metanotes right now, these orange juice notes would have appeared in the first layer that you would see, with a clear indication that there were yet more notes on the older layer that you hadn’t yet seen.

this makes the assumption that you would have intelligence within the notes that said “you, username, have not yet seen this particular note.”

sonicsrini / 2008-03-25 03:39:20

CAN WE DO THE SCROLLING SPACE AKA "ADD ROW" THROUGH VIEWS?

why don’t we just create a new view with the notes scrolled four inches lower in the background?

then when you want to “scroll space to create more space for newer notes” you’re really just switching to another view.

then that view is now the actual space, and a new background view is generated that is ready for the next time you want to create more space.

whoa this might work!!!

the reasoning: if “view as blog” works, why wouldn’t this?

sonicsrini / 2008-03-25 03:48:03

smarter users list

  • i want the users list to be publicized so that people crawl other people’s spaces
  • but not until you can lock notes and spaces

sonicsrini / 2008-03-19 01:15:39

i'm sorry to hear that

what do you hate about them?

what did you like about the old menus?

sonicsrini / 2008-03-25 04:51:34

ANOTHER INBOX NOTIFICATION IDEA.

in the future, you will be able to “reply to a note” that another user has left.

when you reply to a note>

  • a copy of your reply note appears in that users’ inbox.
  • if they reply to your reply, a copy of their reply appears both in your inbox and on the original space where the thread began.
  • you get a time log notification.

sonicsrini / 2008-03-25 04:59:10

this area is for an empathetic talk about INFORMATION BLOAT.

this is an area where we can discuss the “too much information on one space, how will i read it all, i guess i just won’t” problem.

sonicsrini / 2008-03-25 04:53:08

print and view-as-blog

and in my dreams “view as presentation” which would fill up the entire screen (akin to “the widget”) with a prev/next interface

sonicsrini / 2008-03-19 01:09:57

the doorbell!

a quick fix for the current “no notifications exist” problem

also an augmentation (or simplification) of the “collaborate” menu item

  • if i am on manditron’s space
  • and i leave her a few notes
  • after i’m done i can ring her doorbell
    • the doorbell is just a link to this space that i’m on telling her i am the one ringing.
  • then she will get an email (or a tweet or rss or gtalk or timelog or IM on her phone or whatever combination) bringing her to the space
  • if she shows up, great!
    • we get to note-chat.
  • if she doesn’t show up, maybe she’s at the beach.
  • still next time she’s online, she will see that i rang.
    • and i will have “left her a bunch of notes on her doorstep” so that when she returns she’ll see it if she clicks through into the space.
  • she can ignore it but she’ll probably come by the space.
  • then she can ring my doorbell.
    • this should be easily done.
    • my guess is through the attribution menu (right now just a link).

If you could schedule the doorbell to ring in the future that would be a great simple “tennis-court” scheduling system that would increase note-chats.

sonicsrini / 2008-03-18 18:01:00

add traceym75 to the heroes !

also – the title colors are screwed up :P

traceym75 to the heroes ! thanks :)

a hero-adding interface could be created so we could offload this as an ongoing for you ! :)

sonicsrini / 2008-04-21 16:58:33

please don't do this

there should be one true menu style i think

we should spec this out together sometime when you come over!

sonicsrini / 2008-04-21 17:27:42

but THIS IS A BIG PROBLEM for OTHER PEOPLE.

man, i think this space is genius.

but OTHER PEOPLE would be like – too much information on this space to digest! my brain hurts!

and that is a problem.

because then they leave without reading the notes.

sonicsrini / 2008-03-25 05:02:19

vision for the metaspace as a popup over the current space

sonicsrini / 2008-03-21 04:27:18

some of these spaces will be MASSIVE.

i mean the topics to be tracked are massive.

why wouldn’t their corresponding spaces be as well?

sonicsrini / 2008-03-25 04:57:41

inbox

  • make it easier to see the prior notes that are being responded to (conversations)
  • notifications are essential but the doorbell might be enough

once “inbox” is ready, it should be an explicit menu item in the username menu.

In my dreams, you’d see some kind of a flag in that menu item when someone has posted new notes in your inbox.

sonicsrini / 2008-03-16 19:17:20

you should let me create spaces in emery's space.

this is a reversal of what was stated earlier.

i need to leave entire spaces for other people.

of course they can delete them.

these spaces should also appear in MY metaspace too of course.

this basically means that users act like circles in this way also – that is to say, “create a space” should have an option set – “in emery’s metaspace” or “in my metaspace”. ask me if this doesn’t make sense.

sonicsrini / 2008-03-19 05:26:17

blank

a totally blank note should auto-delete.

sonicsrini / 2008-03-26 05:45:46

it'll be so cool when users are associated with spaces via taggig

  • a space tagged with a username should show up in that user’s metaspace.
  • the second you add a note to a page you should have that space tagged with you.
  • that way your metaspace populates with others’ spaces too
  • you should therefore have inbox change to users’ inbox

sonicsrini / 2008-03-18 22:21:05

reply-to note inherent in locking!!!

locking is going to be a great day for metanotes.

someday people won’t be able to delete each others’ notes!!!

people want to know that when they leave a note, it’s going to be there…. only the space creator and the note creator can delete a note.

however i believe anyone should be able to move, resize, or windowshade a note.

just not delete it.

unless the note is explicitly LOCKED.

which should obviously be a contextual menu item.

at any rate.

if a note is someone else’s, you can’t edit it. (this is in the future, after you’ve got locking down.)

so.

the tooltip when you hover over the note shouldn’t say Double-Click To Edit.

instead,

if you click that note, it should spawn a reply note.

sonicsrini / 2008-03-26 06:24:43

persistent (user-level and space-level) note color & font sizing

  • this way you could stay one color all the time easily
  • should be integrated into the color… contextual menu as well as either a panel or a menu-item-wizard

sonicsrini / 2008-03-19 01:47:30

Sent

as you earlier mentioned, of course this would be great because then you could see the notes you have placed elsewhere.

sonicsrini / 2008-03-19 01:20:45

the metaspace integrated into the space

a div which pops up in the screen fast, so there’s no more back and forthing to the metaspace and it’s always ready at hand.

sonicsrini / 2008-03-19 01:10:46

the "wall-to-wall" thing on facebook

  • it is hard to have a conversation in metanotes without some kind of way of seeing the sequence of a conversation as it unfolds
  • that way when you respond to manditron saying something about the new menu structure not being your idea it would be great if i could quickly thread-back and see manditron’s original complaint
  • this would be akin to a “wall-to-wall” feature in facebook
    • basically if i write on someone’s wall in facebook…
    • and they want to reply…
    • the whole thing is exposed publicly…
    • and people can see the whole conversation.

sonicsrini / 2008-03-16 19:34:22

:D

I love the idea of kudos. I know it’s silly, but I always appreciate it when people think enough of something I write or post to give them to me. :)

manditron / 2008-04-25 06:44:37

Definitely

I really like that idea. I feel like my space is getting so big that it’s difficult to find what even I want to see… I can’t imagine what navigating it is like to others.

manditron / 2008-04-25 06:45:45

This might be retarded,

...but I still don’t understand the doorbell? I don’t think I’ve ever noticed it when I’ve been on, and I’ve had ongoing note conversations going with someone.

manditron / 2008-04-25 06:47:44

how note-locking should work

  • all notes should be locked by default.
  • but if you are in your own space, you are an admin and can manipulate any notes in your space.
  • we should be able to knight certain users to be admins in the various circles.

sonicsrini / 2008-03-19 01:18:15

metaspace columns

it’d be great if there were some kind of blaring coolness on a space’s row when someone else left you a note there.

it’d be great if you could loudly advertise how much other-people’s-input you want in any given space.

  • in other words, some spaces should scream “add notes to me!”
  • other spaces should scream “you can look but you can’t touch!”
  • other spaces should scream “private”
  • other spaces should be cloaked entirely from others

sonicsrini / 2008-03-19 01:23:04

tell them not to use the reserved characters

right in the create space wizard

also maybe redirect errors somewhere cooler?

sonicsrini / 2008-03-18 18:12:56

sonicsrini / 2008-03-18 17:59:41

bottom-left status updates

  • so useful feeling as a “history” stack
  • also, sort of a de-facto “guestbook” or “space-log”
  • they are such cool alerts
  • i wish i could see all of my friends’ movements on the system too
    • that way i could note-chat with them faster and more regularly

sonicsrini / 2008-03-16 19:03:02

save space as

  • this way i can create a space and then save a copy of it
  • this would let me back a space up before it was commented up or vandalized
  • this would let me (in the future) lock a space and then save an unlocked copy so everyone could fuck with it
  • this would let me create a business plan template and start multiple businesses off of it

sonicsrini / 2008-03-18 17:29:21

sonicsrini / 2008-03-18 18:59:37

improving note-chatting

  • the collaborate link will help because then you can send note-chat-requests to other people while you’re still on a given space.
    • if you the user leave, oh well.
  • there needs to be some kind of “scheduling” functionality
    • it is a little like a date
    • could online virtual dating be the killer app???

sonicsrini / 2008-03-16 19:37:20

add "sonicsrini" not "srini" to the hosts menu

  • thanks, i’d have more fun with a tiny alias thing rather than just my name :)

sonicsrini / 2008-03-16 19:30:05

when privacy is set up it'll be amazing

  • i think a lot of people are looking for a private solution for notetaking.

I wish there were a birds'-eye-view mode

  • imagine if you could get a very wide view of your entire space
  • and when you hovered over a note, the contents popped out of your mouse
  • and if you doubleclicked anywhere you would zoop back in to where you clicked

sonicsrini / 2008-03-19 01:49:05

a "river" view of your account

you can see all the notes in all the spaces as a timeline extending backwards

sonicsrini / 2008-03-19 01:53:36

"roll back space"

  • whenever you leave a space, a save-space point should be made
  • you should be able to roll a space back to a previous space if someone deleted your notes.

sonicsrini / 2008-03-19 01:17:03

a "notes" menu that updated dynamically

that would be so choice

or at least some kind of a space-loggy thing

maybe like the pbwiki sidebar

sonicsrini / 2008-03-19 01:52:55

The MetaSpace should function as a welcome message thing.

  • like our corporate news could go here.
  • like “you have new notes!”
  • like we could implement an Answering Machine feature and that could be here.
    • imagine if you could actually leave a voicemail for users.
    • that would be so cool.

sonicsrini / 2008-03-19 05:43:43

ah yes, the jjot pop-out note

is that possible? that was a cute feature.

sonicsrini / 2008-03-19 06:02:10

Kudos !!!

  • up to five kudos
    • a note should appear in the note-creator’s inbox saying “you got kudos from username
    • you can’t kudo your own notes
  • there should be a kudos leaderboard
  • hero kudos can count more!
  • giving virtual gifts
  • rankings
  • reporting
  • zipcode identification
  • email notifications

sonicsrini / 2008-03-19 05:31:49

bulk note creation

  • create cluster
  • digesting a mindmap into metanotes

Acknowledgements

I wish there were a way you could “acknowledge” each of these notes.

I wish each of these notes were tied to, like, some kind of scheduler. Like if a due date were assigned a countdown clock would be ticking…. although a bit too ominous perhaps

sonicsrini / 2008-03-19 06:06:46

a tinymce "wizard"

sonicsrini / 2008-03-19 06:02:30

right now when i'm in beppu-space

there’s no indication saying “beppu”.

there should be, or else i’m sort of lost.

beppu’s spaces maybe should be the name of that second menu option if you’re not in your own space

or the spaces menu is always you, but you get an extra beppu’s spaces menu item when you’re in otherspace.

sonicsrini / 2008-03-19 05:51:31

linking notes

not just on a space…

but from inbox-to-inbox too

sonicsrini / 2008-03-19 06:05:19

don't leave blank notes! alert

if the subject is blank and the body is blank then we have a problem

  • either with understanding
  • or just dumbness

an alert when this condition exists would decrease the likelihood of this problem.

ideally the note “starts over” and the alert prompts them to enter a subject line, hit return, then enter the body.

“you did it wrong, try it again” is the attitude

sonicsrini / 2008-03-19 01:55:58

FEELING INFORMATION BLOAT ???

john, i feel for you.

there is TOO MUCH INFORMATION on this space.

first, imagine if these notes were each tiny emails and how hard THAT would be to track. you’ve already helped the world a bunch just with this.

still, the question remains: what are we going to do about the angst you feel at seeing so many notes???

find the light blue twitterpated notes like this one – scroll far to the south. you will find an empathetic voice to discuss this rationally and calmly :)
