There Are Exceptions To Every Rule

Face It, books and movies are created for different audiences. Not everyone has the patience to read `Moby Dick` (I can say from my own experience that it IS a challenge). But there have been two pretty-good adaptations. The example of `Androids` and `Blade Runner` doesn’t work because they were two different stories (read the book if you don’t believe me). They were BOTH good, but for different reasons. Anyone who sees a movie and thinks they know the book is sadly mistaken. Then again, reading Shakespeare gives me a headache, but I never pass up a chance to see it performed.

well

It really, really depends on the book, the producer/director, and the technology put into the movie. I’ve seen good and bad ones.

books - movies - books

generally speaking we can assume a movie from a book is not equal to the written work. i think that assumption holds true for the vast majority of the conversions.

however, whenever this topic comes up among my friends it inevitably turns to do androids dream of electric sheep and the movie bladerunner that it was supposedly based upon.

i believe the works cannot be viewed as stemming from the same source. both do draw upon a pool of similar names, character descriptions (general at best,) and on some levels the mood. but, the movie does not send the same message as the book. ridley scott even admitted, in an interview with NPR that he had never actually finished the P.K. Dick novel because he found it boring. he also insists that deckard is an android. that is not based on the book at all.

evaluating the movie the movie, which based on the directors cut where the hinting at deckard being an android is not as heavy, i enjoy a completely different story.

this is an exception within the book to movie conversion theme.

books vs. movies

Books to movies good idea bad idea or great for folks who are to lazy to read a book?

I'm Lazy

But, yeah, most books are ruined by movies. However, I was turned on to books (In the dark ages, before even VHS) by movies. The first book I read because I liked the movie was `How The Grinch Stole Christmas` by The Good Dr Seuss. (The animated version, not the recent bastardization).
