20 Things: Simon Tam

  1. He never minded when River would correct him on something. Instead, he was always strangely proud of her for being smarter than himself.
  2. When he was in school, getting praised by his teachers embarrassed him terribly. Simon would avoid telling his parents if he received academic awards because of it.
  3. Simon never dated much, or had anything resembling a social life with friends. School and work were always more important than that. The only thing he’s ever been jealous of when it comes to River is her ability to make friends so easily.
  4. Even though he hates to admit it, he despises his parents for what they let happen to River. They are really the first people he has ever actively hated.
  5. When Simon was an attending back on Osiris, he was the type of doctor to take up extra shifts because he actually enjoyed the job. He completed a record number of consecutive successful surgeries in his first year, but refused to be acknowledged for it.
  6. The best sex he ever had happened when he was a resident, with a nurse, in a storage closet. It was very ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and she kind of just left him there, pants around his ankles and very, wonderfully confused about what had just happened.
  7. Sometimes, he really wishes Kaylee would do that to him, but he’s afraid that if it did happen something would go wrong.
  8. Remember that time he was drunk, naked, and singing on the statue of Hippocrates? He’ll say he doesn’t remember what song it was, but really he’s too ashamed to admit that it was a popular ballad at the time.
  9. Boy grew up rich, and it shows. He knows all the proper etiquette that would be expected of any member of a family high up in the Core/Alliance social circles, and he clings to that to give himself an identity outside of his sister and his profession.
  10. Just because he doesn’t enjoy public recognition for his work, that doesn’t mean he’s devoid of any ego. He can be overconfident and cocky when it comes to his job, but he isn’t proud of himself when he realizes it.
  11. Despite everything they didn’t do, his parents still gave him a distinct sense of right and wrong. The most disappointed he’s ever been in his life was when he realized they didn’t follow it and expected him to ignore it.
  12. The real reason he uses so many sedatives with River is that he’s afraid of using the safe-words he was given.
  13. After what happened with the hillfolk, some part of him has known that River is psychic. The idea actually kind of terrifies him, so he’s spent a lot of time since then convincing himself that most of what River says is from intuition or delusions.
  14. Simon is absolutely sure that there will never be a time or place where he feels safe again. It worries him that he’s getting so comfortable on Serenity that he thinks of it as home.
  15. His favorite food is egg foo yung. It was one of the few things his mother actually cooked herself when he was younger.
  16. Egg foo yung is also one of the few dishes he can actually cook without it turning into a horrible smelling mess.
  17. Just because he’s a genius doesn’t mean he’s inept when it comes to more physical activities. He was never as exceptional at them as he is with academics, but he wasn’t bad at it either. Fencing is the one sport he excelled at, though not very far.
  18. Also, he can play the clarinet just like his mun. He learned the instrument more out of the necessity for an extracurricular course than any real desire to play, though. (He was fourth chair, hated the music the director picked, and had a crush on a girl who played the piccolo.)
  19. He broke his arm falling out of a tree when he was 10. River was 5 and had climbed up to one of the top branches and he had chased after her. The whole experience is what made him want to become a doctor.
  20. Simon knows English, Chinese, and Russian, but only speaks English fluently.

IDKMYBFFMASTER? PLOT!

20 Things: River Tam

  1. When she was 10, River started stealing Simon’s school work to erase his answers and write in mistakes that she could correct for him later. It was her little way of staying close to him when he was going off and having his own life outside of her.
  2. If Simon goes planetside without her now, she hides in one of the hidden storage compartments until he comes back. River knows it doesn’t really stop the connection, but she likes to think that hiding will muffle the sounds if he gets shot. (ETA This won’t start until we get to that point in canon)
  3. At first, when Jubal Early came to take her in, she was going to go with him. The plan didn’t come until after what he did to Kaylee. When River heard him threaten her, the gears started turning and that spacesuit went on. (ETA Again, not until we get there.)
  4. River still has all the pillows she stole from Saffron’s room. She’s hidden them in strategic little spots around Serenity. Two in the cargo hold, one in the infirmary, one in her room, and one in the kitchen. She tried to hide one on the bridge, but Wash found it and she had to find another spot. Isn’t hidden very well if someone else knows where it is.
  5. She can memorize a room in an instant. Give her some more time, and she’ll know every measurement, angle, and degree of it. The whole process of that kind of memorization was part of the ‘active’ training she went through at the Academy. The ‘passive’ training involved a lot more needles and River was kept asleep for it. Sometimes, they’d keep her asleep for days, so she would do as much as she could while awake to compensate for it.
  6. The code she used to write to Simon from inside the Academy was based on the phrase “I told you so.” River, being the little brat she is, used to tell him that every time he’d challenge an answer of hers and she turned out right. In the code, it meant that he was right. Simon had never felt right about sending her away, and she’d insisted that it was a good place. It was her way of apologizing for it.
  7. She’s very aware that she doesn’t make a lot of sense. Somewhere between the thought and the words, it all gets jumbled together with everything else. Part of it has to do with her missing amydala and other scarring on her brain. Most of it, though, is the fact that some things she talks about are things she’d rather not, so mixing it up is almost a defense mechanism. Some piece of her hopes that if no one understands it or believes it, then maybe it never really happened and she can go back to normal one day.
  8. Every time she steps off of Serenity and onto a planet, she stomps the ground three times to make sure that it’s solid. There are dreams River has where the earth crumbles in under her, and she’d rather be cautious and silly than unsafe and falling into the middle of a moon.
  9. The day the Academy representative came to talk to River and her parents about her options for going there, she cried herself to sleep because she didn’t think they’d let her go.
  10. Green beans are her least favorite vegetable. She hates the texture of them in her mouth and will spit them out when Simon isn’t looking. The vegetable she loathes, though, is peas. Not because of texture or taste, but because of all the associations it has in her head. After throwing a plate of them across the kitchen one day, Simon finally got that it would be useless to try and get her to eat any and changed tactics: broccoli. River will pretend to be a giant giraffe that’s eating trees when there’s broccoli.
  11. River gets a strange kind of joy from humiliating her brother in front of Kaylee, or just letting him know that he’s humiliated himself because then she gets to tell him that things aren’t so bad and be the one to watch out for him, if only for a small amount of time.
  12. It took three months there for her to realize what the Academy really was. She still regrets not figuring it out sooner. The first month and a half, she attended what seemed to be normal advanced classes. Then they put her in the gifted dorms, where they started giving her strange medication and running physical tests. The third month is when they put her to sleep for three days and she woke up hearing voices while she was strapped to a chair and five needles were sticking out of her left temple.
  13. At night, when everyone is sleeping and quiet, she can see their dreams. River has never told anyone that she can because she’s sure they’d be mad at her for it. Mal’s dreams of the war have made her want to cry, but the emotions in Zoe’s where she and Wash have a child made her sob for an hour.
  14. Once, after she had asked Book to marry them, Simon asked Inara to talk to River about sex. She then went into great clinical detail about the act, after which Inara refused to lecture her any more on what she obviously already knew. While River knows the mechanics of it, she still doesn’t quite get the whys or hows. She’ll go and ask Inara on her own when she’s ready.
  15. River likes to sneak onto the bridge when just her and Wash are awake to talk to him and play with the dinosaurs. He never really understands her, but he plays along anyway and ruffles her hair when she makes silly faces at him.
  16. Back on Osiris, before the Academy, River would go with her mother to pick out flowers to plant in their garden. Her favorite flowers are hyacinth because they remind her of bells. Her mother told her they fed the soul, and when they froze over during a climate control malfunction one year, River held a little funeral for them.
  17. Dance classes were every Tuesday and Wednesday, and she was always there a half hour early. Part of it was her enthusiasm for it, and part of it was because she’d rather dance there alone for a few minutes with no one watching her or correcting her form. It was freeing.
  18. River has stolen Jayne’s cunning hat and hidden it from him more than once. She does it every time he says something without thinking, and is hoping to train him into better behavior. Thus far, it hasn’t worked out well.
  19. She knew, before going to Ariel, what they had done to her. She still remembers every part of it, but River couldn’t bring herself to tell Simon. She didn’t have the words for it, and if she did have the words, she wouldn’t be able to say them. Every time she remembers it, she feels like she’s back in that chair. She sees the blue lights, holoscreens, hears the vital monitors beeping. It terrifies her more than the memories she has of Miranda.
  20. Sometimes, River will forget to brush her hair. The first time it was even combed through after Simon took her from the Academy, it had been two weeks and having Simon try to work through the tangles made her cry. Kaylee had to step in and finish the job.

Character Notes: Simon Tam

Notes for psychics: Being ever so much the opposite of River, his thinking is very linear. Probably borderline-OCD. Everything has a place, and it freaking goes there or else he starts to feel out of sorts and generally unsettled. This is why he’s got such a problem understanding River when she goes into crazy!tiem, he just can’t fathom how she makes the connections she does.

Simon is a very focused individual. When he’s not thinking about his sister (notlikethatew), her treatment, or staying away from the Alliance, well, that’s usually when he sleeps. As with River, any canon info (right now we’re up to ‘The Message’) is free, as well as any DDD canon.

What’s Okay To Mention Around Him: Pfft, everything! He’ll get anywhere between slightly snappy to really freaking angry if you’re negative about/towards River, though. He’s a very protective big brother. Threaten her and he’ll probably want to do doctor-y violence to you with scalpels. Very protective. Simon’s trauma buttons usually involve the idea of getting caught by the feds, something bad happening to River, his parents, and being out in space.

OH! And please, feel free to make fun of him when he fails romantically with Kaylee. It’s funny.

Abilities: He’s 23 and already an accomplished surgeon. ‘Genius’ and ‘damn fine doctor’ are good adjectives for him.

Can I shapeshift/bodyswap/slash/etc?: Ask first? I’m totally open to it, though he’ll undoubtedly freak the hell out.

Maim/Murder/Death: Oooo, I’m not sure? Maiming could be hilarious fun, but I don’t think I want him to die. He’s much too pretty to die. Also, River would be VERY UPSET.

Kissing/Hugging/Badtouch: HAHAHAHAHAHA, like he gets any, anyway… >.>

Seriously, though, he’s too uptight to go after the girl he likes, despite being around her 24/7 and her obvious interest. Most you’re going to get from him is a handshake and a smile. Maybe, like, a half-hug if you’re lucky.

Easiest way to get on his good side: Help River, or offer to help him help River. Seriously, if River likes you he probably will, too. If you can help him understand her, that’s even better.

Easiest way to get on his bad side: Hurt River, or tell him he’s not doing a good job of helping her himself. Boy may be selfless when it comes to his sister, but he’s still got an ego. “Working for the Alliance” probably fits under this, too.

Favorite Person: You get three guesses and the first two don’t count.

Favorite Person met on the comm: He hasn’t met many people yet, but he’s already starting to see Quatre and Bertie as trustworthy friends.

Prefers: Brown hair and engine grease- I MEANUHM… No, really, Kaylee probably embodies most his ‘type:’ bright, friendly, flirtatious, willing to tell him when he’s screwed something up but still encouraging when he needs it.

Character Notes: River Tam

Notes for psychics: River’s mind is a very confusing place. Imagine a 1000 piece puzzle dumped out of the box and mixed up with pieces from twenty other 1000 piece puzzles, with a few hundred more pieces not from any puzzles that won’t ever make a whole picture. Not everything fits, not everything is hers, and not everything is going to make much sense. Girl tries, but it’s a sea of pieces she isn’t exactly equipped to navigate at the moment.

She remembers certain things in odd ways, too. For her, it’s like reliving it. River will feel everything all over again, see the room the way it was, hear it all again crystal clear and exact as the first time it happened. It gets less intense as time goes on, but for the most part she hates it.

That said, most of the Firefly/Serenity comic/DDD canon is up for grabs. (ETA Other Firefly muns are going with an earlier point in canon. Specifically, between The Message and Heart of Gold. You’ll know as the plot advances, and DDD canon is always up for grabs.) If you think your pup picked something up from her, go right ahead and take it. Only things really off limits for anyone to see/know from her is that the ‘dead planet’ she babbles about sometimes is called Miranda, the safe words to shut her off, and those gorram Fruity Oaty Bars.

What’s Okay To Mention Around Her: Anything, really, outside of the above off-limits-things. Spaceships, maths, poetry, science, crew, taxonomy… Not that she’ll be the best at talking back about these subjects, of course.

Trauma-buttons include: the Academy, brains, mad!science, trying to kill/hurt the people she loves, blue hands and/or suns, and needles. Push them at will.

Abilities: She can read minds a bit, and predict outcomes pretty damn well. There’s also that thing where she can kick your ass six ways to Sunday and back again.

Can I shapeshift/bodyswap/slash/etc?: Shapeshift- Ask first, though I’m sure she’d probably enjoy it. Bodyswap- Just ask, and remember that her abilities are linked to her brain that is in her body. If your pup is in her brain, they’ll be getting the whole shebang of missing amygdala, strange memories and unspoken voices. Slash- I’m all for the girlkissy. Etc.- Ping me and we’ll work something out. Etceteral things are always fun.

Maim/Murder/Death: I don’t think she’ll be doing too much fighting right now, but injuries happen. Murder? Not so much. If you’ve got a burning need to kill her off, it would make me very sad. I can understand the wanting to because she doesn’t make any bit of sense sometimes, and I truly am very sorry about that, but yeah. Unless she can come back/be not dead very soon after, it’ll probably be a no.

Kissing/Hugging/Badtouch: Physical affection and stuff is good. Hugs, cuddles, little pecks and whatnot are all green. She is a bit immature, though, so I’m going to hesitate on the badtouch for a little while. River went into the Academy when she was 14, and in a lot of ways she’s still very much a little girl that’s trying to cope with a lot. Eventually she’ll get to the point where I’ll be more comfortable with her getting a bit of ‘experience’ but there’s probably a fair bit of plot between now and then.

Easiest way to get on her good side: Let her ramble at you, understand her, or ask her questions. Basically, play along if you don’t know what she’s saying, and if you do know what message she’s trying to get across, let her know it. Rambling back earns extra points.

Easiest way to get on her bad side: Threaten to and/or hurt someone she cares about. That’s a one way ticket to River’s shit list. Another way to get her upset with you, if not on her shitlist, is to ignore or dismiss her. Act bored or actively mean/snide/whatever when she’s trying to explain something, and she’ll get bratty.

Favorite Person: Simon, hands down. River will give him a hard time, and she’ll have her moments with him where it’s less than perfect, but she loves him dearly and knows how much he sacrificed to save her.

Favorite Person met on the comm: Tie between Kvasir and Mister Saxon, though we all know that whole “IDKMYBFFMASTER” won’t last forever. Kvasir, on the other hand, is like her new second godly big brother. River will trust Kvasir to the ends of the multiverse and back again, really. Saxon, though, is the first other person she’s met that can read her mind, and, you know, he gave her the drums. Crazyteim drums, but she likes them quite a bit.

Prefers: I really don’t even know at this point. She doesn’t know, other than that she’s not allowed to marry her brother.
