NO!

They’re fucking horrible.

Their brand of subversion isn’t the good kind.

things i really don't understand

  • RSS.
    • What is RSS?
      • How would I explain it to my dad, for instance?
    • How do people plug into RSS?
    • Is it a generic form of notifications?

patriot act

patriot act requires information companies provide a way for government to spy on user data ?!

this means it is key that we “productize” metanotes as a service that companies and universities can deploy autonomously behind their own firewalls.

google’s strategy is to host the data itself, but this article implies that that enterprises won’t buy it. enterprises want to host their own data, which coincides with us not wanting to be in the bandwidth business anyway.

so we should sell metanotes for the enterprise (aka “peoplemath”) as a deployment behind the company’s firewall. this will require an implementations operation – most likely someone will have to go and deploy it and work on interfaces with the IT department and stuff. something to think about.

after we code the bookmarklet...

...we should have a feature:

what are my friends linking to?

i am imagining metanotes users linking to tons of web content once the bookmarklet is up.

this linkathon should be social.

in other words,

i want to see my friends’ discoveries.

this would basically imply that:

the bookmarklet is connected to the Time Log.

sonicsrini / 2008-03-25 17:06:38

Explicit relationship building is a pain.

slowly, tediously, we send and receive and accept individual friend requests in each and every network we are in.

it becomes a wash of friend tedium if you have to do it for different social networks separately.

there are also different LEVELS of friends that are rarely accounted for in social networks.

our social graphs are complex and there’s no keeping up.

Some Universal Identity Foundations

  • OpenID
    • This is a federation approach
    • Major player oligopoly serves as a set of “focal points”
      • google
      • microsoft

      • plaxo
    • All players must realize they should work together to grow the market faster and better.

how do they represent themselves?

  • they already are part of so many networks
  • i hate to have to make them fill out yet another one!
    • we want to be meta – that means we should abstract from others where possible.

Levels Of Communication Intimacy

  • Most Intimate = Me.
    • My own spaces.
    • Private time log.
    • Journal.
  • Closest – IM/Chat.
    • I only do this with people pretty close to me.
  • Usually closest, sometimes weaker
    • Cell phone calls.
    • I’ll call people I barely know as well as my close friends.
  • Less close but still one to one
    • Email.
    • I’ll often email close friends but also less close.
    • It’s perfect for work.
  • Willing to broadcast my info to close strangers
    • My calendar.
    • My profile.
    • My blog.

sonicsrini / 2008-03-25 16:56:55

where do they post?

book reviews on amazon?

comments on tech blogs?

personal information on facebook?

metanotes should help users aggregate these.

i’m imagining the bookmarklet as a way to do this but also an API.

when data comes in to metanotes, it should spawn a space in the user’s account into which data from that source should stream. like “facebook profile”.

note chatting with matt and the "doorbell" concept

isn’t it appealing to see your name in the spacename during a note chat ?

there’s something about “summoning” another user to a note-chat…. it’s nice when that user sees your name.

i’m going to “ring your doorbell” in the old-school way, send you a gmail about it…

...but you are most certainly asleep…

...and yet, the doorbell rung has value, since even in your sleep i can create notes for your next internet session.

...and if it be i_ that is asleep next time you ring _my doorbell (aka you’ve added some content to this page), the chat can continue in this non-synced fashion…

...but should it ever happen that we are online at the same time, one of us ringing the others’ doorbell might just summon us to the same page at the same time which would lead (hopefully) to a note-chat.

  • i have been invited to some exclusive hush hush retreat in asilomar by a former stanford friend turned lawyer, anne p mitchell.
  • the implication is that she’s going to try to get me funded.
  • or maybe meet someone important.
  • she knows guy kawasaki.
  • maybe that has something to do with it.
  • at any rate, free lawyer for almost a week.
