to see a space full of notes percolate up on a metanotes space as i was watching?

to see other people in the tv audience reacting to the information and posting wikipedia links?

beyond just twittering about it – building a giant group reaction wall?

i understand that this could be done through IM but there is no big kahuna here

and this crosses the chasm!

You take an input stream.

TV is such an input stream – it never ends.

You put it through a value-adding process.

METANOTES lets users converse about TV as it happens.

You get a valuable output.

This would create interesting walls of dicussion content to which future readers could refer to when researching.

If TV shows were perfect, they’d be interactive.

Basically the atomic audience out there in TV-Land has about zero contact with each other during (or even after) the broadcast.

MetaNotes adds value to live events.

In other words, take notes and watch other people leave notes about a live event. Leave a little monument to your thoughts during the event. Interact with other notetakers. Watch things on your computer screen that complement the event.

And TV is an endless stream of pseudo-live events.

So plug the TV stream into MetaNotes and voila! The ultimate complement to television – just what the networks have wanted to invent but failed to invent.

I want people who aren’t glued to the Internet to use METANOTES.

People watch a lot of TV.

TV is a “live event generator”.

But people don’t take NOTES on their watching of course.

However the ‘Net is full of chatter on TV.

Why not chatter in REAL TIME ?

I’ll have to research this – who’s the 800-pound gorilla in this?

New “listings” are being created all the time.

Each listing starts with a core of information.

METANOTES adds value by putting a layer of discussion over this core.

This will make us the Most Valuable Listing Service.

Ideally the listings feed in via RSS.

as i went to change the note color I noticed the tags option… awesome!!

have you thought about specializing certain tags depending on what circle it’s in? for instance this TV discussion idea.

...also, i am intrigued by the idea of an onboard “calendar” so you could tag a note to “pop up” as a “reminder” in the future.

it’s amazing the walls of content you can create so fast

it makes writing a paper fun !!!

instead of threaded comments you can literally see the map of ideas being created

i’m totally addicted, it is hard to do anything else :)

social writing is amazing.

it’s sort of like when a conversation begins, a “tag” is generated with a “conversation ID”.

this “tag” can be followed backwards or forwards in time or along various users.

in a way the “tag” spawns a “space” where only the notes tagged with that particular conversation ID are displayed.

this would let you quickly see the whole conversation.

we can pull notes conforming to a specific tag to create a temporary overly “layer” that only holds that conversation.

we have this concept of certain tags being triggers to special conditions or behaviors.

like kudos.

or “favorites”.

or rating

you could also “star” the note.

this would add that note to your “starred” notespace, from which you could send it to one of your other spaces.

since the note’s tags would stay with it, you could navigate from that note up and down its own particular conversation chains.

say you just want the conversation that spawned from something 20 posts in, can you let someone isolate that chain?

ok so obviously in note chats people tend to CRASH INTO EACH OTHER!

it’d be super cool for notes to have a repulsion field so that new notes would spawn in such a way that they didn’t overlap.

bozos might spend all day covering up other people’s notes.

so we actually have thought about physics some !! :) but this is a good spark to think further about it.

that is one of the hardest things…

conversations – especially ones that span spaces – need to be linked to one another somehow.

like inbox-to-inbox conversations are sort of a mess.

so that is some brain puzzling we still need to sort out :)

so there will be a reply button or something?

it is fun to zoop around a space.

right now you can only really do this in the Notes menu (the one that’s right now a submenu of the “THE TV CIRCLE” menu, it’ll be better soon.)

we will have more ways to zoop.

the “star” idea has been in there for a while, just thought i’d bust it out to illustrate a specific usage :)

you’re suggesting a very neat feature.

i think we can do this with views.

a zoom out view might show all of the note subjects and be clickable, zooping into the clicked note.

so this is good.

this is like only the third or fourth note chat that has ever really happened you know :)

how will you decide which way to go?

that means the conversation ID tag should be rich.

you should be able to hover over a conversation ID and see the title of the next note of that conversation in the tooltip.

very cool – obviously we need to have more RSS goodness so if you’re subscribed to a circle you can choose to get news of new notes from any given space poked out into your Time Log.

you would tag a given note “obama” if it related to obama…

...and then it would be linked to all other notes called obama.

each space is not just a wild profusion of notes in all directions.

it’s also a linear sequence.

we’ll have a link between each note made, one after the other.

of course you can monkey with the sequence.

this enables a powerpoint like view of even a spazzy space.

can you zoom in and out? you may go off way to the side, and need to get to somewhere other than the top left

so much to do ! :)

why not set physical elasticity to individual messages?

I’m not saying the physics need to be there yet, but just don’t let any individual reply get X distance away from parent. then things will be easier to shift around once a conversation is built.

(plus it would be cool to see them drag around!!)

that is a powerful thing, twitter bringing people into metanotes spaces

i finally sort of get it.

imagine if every note you created was posted out to twitter. now that would be crazy, and we won’t do that (although you’ll be able to send a single note to twitter in the future.

but that’s the “user activity stream” of a metanotes user.

and we can do some interesting things based on those streams, especially when we get friending going.

it would be cool to be able to link between notes almost like a wiki, except instead of plain HTML anchors you could be dropped into the middle of a space here

they will though, they sure will

one of the best things about this kind of conversation.

it’s fun to go back through the conversation and fill more ideas in.

also, future people can chime in adding value.

they are automatically tagged with a unique conversation ID.

this keeps them “together”, the same way a tag keeps items together.

i am pretty certain beppu is coding user-level note themes at some point if he hasn’t already.

i would love user-level note themes to somehow relate to tagging as well.

it would be AWESOME to be able to define a type of thought that a note is (ephiphany, question, parenthetical thought etc)

you could define a default style for each..

a user-defined list of styles would be a generic way to do this, so they could use it however they want (thought types, different teams of a research group)

user-defined styles would be nice anyway, so I don’t have to type out the colors each time

• i created that space.
• i think it is always interesting when you create a space and someone else writes a note in it.
  • ideally you can rush to that space and note-chat with them!
• so that means i want to be “subscribed” to that space.
• when i check my Time Log, i should see that you added a note.
• if i click that Time Log entry, i should be transported to that note on that space.
• if i choose, i can turn these notifications off.
• since many of these may be spawned, they can be tagged and placed in a second tab of the time log (aka the space log).

i think that is going to be a valuable notification framework indeed

I want people using METANOTES all the time.

People fall in love when they see the note chat feature.

They will like the idea of note-chatting about events as they happen.

in order to do that we need to plug input streams that spawn conversations into METANOTES.

TV is such an input stream.
