almost any "research" or "brainstorming" task needs PRESENCE.

  • The ultimate collaboration vision we are after relates to the digital whiteboard.
  • It is so much easier to create tons of content when you have a participating and intelligent audience watching and interacting with you.
    • We write (e.g. converse) so much more effectively with an audience.
    • Every research or brainstorm task turns into this two-way interview.

been taking notes for twenty minutes now

still nobody else on this space.

well it’s easter, people might be busy, it’s a beautiful day, hopefully my friends are all out and about.

but part of it is that maybe my charisma has not been known as the most collaborative person in the world either.

I guess that needs to change…

still i hope that my twitter call results in some notes put on this space by people other than me.

i wish there were a single-signon solution

it would be so cool if you were auto-registered with twitter (you could disable via checkbox if so inclined) when you signed up with metanotes.

"i'm taking notes live right now, come collaborate!"

  • that’s how i feel right now
  • if someone were online at the same time, it would be so cool if they’d come on down and collaborate
  • as i understand it they’d see me working and feel like pitching in
  • so there’s some application, i think it might be ustream.tv ?, that tweets out a call to come chat into twitter when the user wants to get people on board for the chat.
  • we’re going to do that too

PRESENCE

  • “Presence” applications make for interesting synergies with MetaNotes.
  • This is because MetaNotes really comes alive when in multi-user mode.
  • Our product development is going to be focused on creating moments.
    • It is “situationist product development”.
  • The specific type of moment we want to create:
    • Two or more users on a single space watching each other take notes.
    • Some kind of defining topic or “reason” they want to participate in the space.
  • Twitter as a presence app lets us engineer these moments.

If only everyone on MetaNotes was on Twitter too!

Then we’d be able to use Twitter as our broadcast system.

When you were working on a space you could broadcast out that you were working on that space to all of your Twitter friends.

People would also be able to follow each other through Twitter.

SPEED TO COLLABORATION

  • i am interested in decimating the obstacles to actual collaboration that users feel using other systems.
  • it needs to be ridiculously fun to collaborate.
  • it should be virtually effortless and immediate.
  • anybody with an email address should be able to be invited.
  • however people with twitter will be the easiest to access.
  • therefore, i feel like we need to sell twitter to our audience.

Synchronicity is bad...

While I agree it is awesome to collaborate on notes in realtime, its also a real drag to have to schedule your time when we are all so busy.

What would be cool is to see a “playback” of a recorded session. For example, if 3 people collaborated in realtime, I can click a play button and it visually shows me what notes were created in “realtime” as if I had been there at the time.

what about another panel

I see these panels in the upper right.. Could the “follow” feature be integrated as one of those?

chrisruppel / 2008-03-25 15:55:55

fascinating

we talked about this at defcon ! you had mentioned that same idea ! that is totally right.

sonicsrini / 2008-03-25 02:52:26

friendfeed input and output

obviously we should use rss to help users track changes that their friends have made since they last used metanotes

sonicsrini / 2008-03-25 02:55:42

maybe just a notification onsite?

I think it could be more practical to implement this as your own notification within metanotes. As the user goes between spaces you could alert others who are already on the site.

I’m just thinking that if I’m out and about, knowing someone just came to write some notes isn’t going to be useful until I get to the computer anyway.

aaand, after two days of using metanotes, I realize how useful twitter can be for this type of thing!!

chrisruppel / 2008-03-24 03:31:17

playback may be tricky

I’ve seen playback for various apps (drawball was cool) but that may be a bit more of a hassle in HTML/JS rather than Flash.

chrisruppel / 2008-03-25 15:53:51

yes that is correct

we have a Time Log

we are constructing a Space Log too

or we may decide to make it all one activity stream
